With just $25,000 of borrowed capital, Bernard Rapoport founded American Income Life Insurance Company more than 50 years ago. Today, American Income Life has become one of the nation's largest providers of supplemental life insurance to labor unions, credit unions, and associations. American Income provides coverage to over two million policyholders and represents over $90 million in annual insurance product sales. American Income's growth has been sustained through high customer satisfaction, innovative lead programs, word of mouth referrals, and one of the most lucrative Agent compensation programs in the industry.

A.M. Best, one of the country's oldest and most respected insurance ratings company, has rated American Income Life Insurance Company as A+ (Superior) for overall Financial Strength (as of 6/10).

Awards

American Income Life Founder Bernard Rapoport Honored for Philanthropy

It’s a rare thing to find a person who exhibits all the characteristics in the word philanthropy. But the Central Texas Association of Fundraising Professionals had no trouble selecting Bernard Rapoport as this individual.

On Nov. 3, 2011, Bernard Rapoport received the Central Texas AFP Lifetime Achievement Award based on his donations and support for various causes.

In 1917, Bernard Rapoport was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Jewish immigrants from Russia. Growing up during the Great Depression was hard, and the family found themselves living mostly in poverty. Bernard’s father peddled blankets on the street for income.

After working a full-time job and saving as much as he could, Rapoport was able to afford the tuition at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1939 he finished his bachelor’s degree in economics, and a few years later met his future wife, Audre. In 1951, Bernard founded American Income Life Insurance Company (AIL). AIL is a company that provides supplemental life, accident, and health insurance to labor unions, credit unions, and associations.

Bernard shaped American Income Life into a socially conscious company. He implemented a policy still in force today where American Income Life representatives collect canned food when they meet clients. This way, if any clients can’t afford food, American Income Life Insurance Company can provide them with something.

Bernard and his wife created the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Foundation in 1981. The foundation’s primary focus is giving back to the community. Bernard has supported many programs like the Waco Symphony Association, American Cancer Society, and Baylor University.

Bernard Rapoport has also received many other awards:

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt Distinguished Public Service Award
  • Gate of Zion Award (Jerusalem)
  • Honorary Doctorate of Literature (Hanyang University)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award (National Jewish Democratic Council)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award (Waco Business League)
  • PBS Development Leadership Award
  • Presidential Citation (University of Texas)
  • Santa Rita Award (University of Texas Board of Regents)

At the age of 94, Bernard continues his passion for helping others.

American Income Life CEO Roger Smith receives the Eleanor Roosevelt Award

On Nov. 18, Roger Smith had the honor of accepting the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award by the American Rights at Work organization, a labor advocacy and policy organization dedicated to promoting the freedom of workers to form unions and bargain collectively.

Roger accepted the award on behalf of the Business Leaders for a Fair Economy, an organization which he chairs. Roger has played a tremendous role in growing the group to a coalition of more than 1,700 business owners and executives supporting the Employee Free Choice Act.

“Smith has helped shape the coalition’s efforts to pass the Employee Free Choice Act,” according to the American Rights at Work website, which called Roger “a longtime ally for working families.”

The award memorializes the former First Lady and United Nations ambassador. Mrs. Roosevelt helped pass the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says in part, “Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association and the right to join trade unions.”

Other 2009 award recipients were actors Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford, EFCA advocates best known for their roles on the “West Wing” television series; and former AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney. They were honored at an awards celebration held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington.

The award is in its fifth year. Roger joins the ranks of previous recipients including American Income Life and National Income Life founder Bernard Rapoport, Danny Glover, Studs Terkel, and the Harley Davidson Motor Co.

Congratulations, Roger! And, thank you for your leadership promoting EFCA and for your tireless efforts to improve the lives of working families
